Learning experiences with Concept Map

I am writing this to share my experiences gained during the task of making, reviewing and updating of my Concept map.

Working with VUE (Visual Understanding environment) was altogether a new experience for me. It is one of the softwares for integrating and presenting of the information and learning resources. I found it easy to use and very helpful in managing and structuring the topics and other information. Initially I had to struggle a bit with the presentation of the pictorial content, but soon the problem was sorted out.

The concept map was to be made on any chapter from NCERT textbook. I chose the topic of the class 6 book- Light, from Physics ( which is also my pedagogy subject). The making of concept map was quite interesting. I learnt to arrange topics in hierarchy (wherever required) and to connect them using the linking words.

Next part of the task was to review the concept maps of the other group members. It was also enriching task in terms of both knowledge and creativity. It was a way of looking into various topics from a new angle and an opportunity to learn from others experiences as well.

Last but not the least, we had to update the concept map based in the reviews of other group. I changed a few topics which were pointed out as – being above the standards for class 6th. I also added more pictures for better understanding.

Overall it was like coming face to face with the power of ICT and tools to enrich the experience of both teaching and learning through computers.

Updated Concept Map

Light, Shadows and Reflection

Here is my updated concept map on the topic “Light”, for understanding concepts related to light and reflection for beginners. This is from class 6th of Science NCERT (Chapter 11- Light, Shadows and Reflection).

As suggested in the review by Group A(V), the topics and activities related to the topic “Shadows” are added. Also, the portion explaining the “Laws of Reflection” has been omitted as it was out of scope of class 6.

Review By : Group A(VI) ( Group members : Bhumika, Richa, Yash)
Review Of : Group A(V)  ( Group members : Abhishek, Arun, Deepak, Dharmendra)

Here is the review of the concept maps of Group A(V) – on various topics from ‘Physics’

1. Abhishek : Concept Map Topic – “Matter

View Concept Map by Abhishek

The classification of matter and its subdivision is explained with proper linking words.
There is a scope of including more topics to elaborate it further ( for eg. properties, examples, method of separation of mixtures, etc.) . Also the class for which the concept map is made needs to be mentioned.

2. Arun : Concept Map Topic- “Motion

View Concept Map by Arun

The topics in “types of motion” are explained using illustrations, which makes it easier to comprehend.
However (according to the chapter in class 6th) the topic “Measurement of distances” which include topics like- Standard Units of measurements, correct measurements etc. are missing. This needs to be accommodated in the map as per the content requirement. Also, some topics (like uniform and non uniform motion) are above the scope of class 6th. Class and chapter name should be mentioned

3. Deepak : Concept Map Topic-  “Sources Of Energy

View Concept Map by Deepak

The concept map has a continuity and has used the pictorial representation to brief about the included topics.
The title of the concept map and class needs to be added. Most of the topics from NCERT textbook have been covered. However, two topics which are “Energy from the Sea” and “Environmental Consequences” should also be included.

4. Dharmendra : Concept Map Topic- ” Velocity

View Concept Map by Dharmendra

The concept of velocity is explained elaborately. There is a need to specify that for which class this concept map is made. Also, more topics (like scalar and vector quantities, speed etc.) should be included to cover a chapter as a whole.

Why did I choose to pursue B.Ed.?

Teachers are of two kinds-  teachers by chance and teachers by choice.

I am happy and lucky that I place myself in the later category. I have always had an inclination towards teaching. I wanted to engage with my subject of study i.e. Physics both as a learner and as a teacher. So, after I completed my post graduation, I opted for doing B.ed. I got asmission in CIE- a premier institute in Education. It further strengthened my aspiration of choosing B.ed. because of its leaning environment.
